Washington UBI Number
Washington Unified Business Identifier Number
The Washington Unified Business Identifier number (Washington UBI number) is a 9-digit number issued by the Washington Secretary of State and used by every Washington state agency. It could be also called a tax registration number, a business registration number, or a business license number.
4 Steps to get a Washington UBI the right way:
- Register with the Secretary of State
- Master business license application
- Trade license if needed
- Department of Revenue
A common mistake is to get it through the Master Business License application. You’ll be “assigned” a number, but then it will be worthless to you if you’re wanting to start a Washington LLC or form a corporation in Washington. You won’t even get your Master Business License approved until you register with the Washington Secretary of State. If you go through the Master Business License application, and get assigned a UBI, it will drastically slow down every other agency registration for you.
It is important for a contractor working in Washington to have a UBI number because it is required to classify you as an independent contractor rather than an employee of your client. You are also required to post your contractor’s license, which contains your Washington UBI number, on the job site.
